Honoring the Land and Standing with the Filipino Community
We respectfully acknowledge that the land we gather on, live on, and create on is the unceded, traditional, and ancestral territory of the Indigenous Nations across what is now known as British Columbia. These lands have never been surrendered and remain the homelands of diverse and sovereign peoples who continue to care for and protect them with resilience and love.
Today, we speak these truths while holding space for another community facing profound loss. On April 26th, during the Filipino Street Festival in Vancouver, a tragedy unfolded that forever changed the lives of many. We mourn alongside the victims, the survivors, and the families affected by this heartbreaking event.
We recognize and honor the rich contributions of the Filipino community to the vibrant fabric of these lands. In this time of grief, we stand beside you, offering not only our condolences but our commitment to remembrance, healing, and solidarity.
We also recognize the many Indigenous Nations across this province — including the Musqueam (xʷməθkʷəy̓əm), Squamish (Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw), Tsleil-Waututh (səl̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ), and countless others — whose stewardship and strength inspire the spirit of community that sustains us all
